Fourth graders have been studying geography in their History and Social Science classes this year. As part of that study, they created "History of Me" projects, sharing not only a timeline of their lives, but also studying exactly "where in the world" (and where in Crozet!) they lived. Another piece of our work to help them learn about the Crozet community was to help them learn historical facts about their roads and neighborhoods.
We contacted the Albemarle County Planning Department by way of an incredible man, Tex Weaver. Mr. Weaver, with the help of Ty Chambers, provided us some wonderful resources--multiple area maps of our school district, and the letters written by citizens to name our roads when the Enhanced 911 project came through our area. Mr. Chambers even hand delivered these materials on a sunny day, deliberately avoiding a rainy Friday so the huge maps would not get wet! We certainly appreciate the support of their bosses, too, Mr. Mark Graham, Director of Community Development, and Mr. Wayne Cilimberg, Director of Planning, in their support of these professional and supportive men who made a HUGE difference in the quality of the experience our students had! Thanks so much, Mr. Weaver and Mr. Chambers! We couldn't have done it without you! We put one set of these maps on a huge bulletin board and watched the kids' excitement soar! |
Here's a scene of our bulletin board with the maps on it.
Some fourth graders are comparing their home locations and identifying local landmarks!
First, the kids took home their geography notebooks which had a small map of our area. Family members helped them locate their address on the map. |
Before we got the professional maps, we made our own. (Thanks, Mrs. Robinson!) The kids found their neighborhoods and roads, and the location of their homes. They added this piece of information to their "History of Me" projects and showed their classmates where they lived.
Then, we researched our roads and our neighborhoods to learn about their history. After that, we created scripts and then made podcasts of our information. We hope you enjoy them! |
