On Monday, October 10, the Albemarle County School Board approved a redistricting plan that directs the transfer of 479 students to different schools in the fall of 2006. Theplan that was adopted is the same plan that the Superintendent presented in July, 2005.

The School Board also approved the inclusion of a "grandfathering" clause in the redistricting plan. This clause would allow for students to finish their years in the school in which they are enrolled when the redistricting plan is implemented. Families opting to keep students in their original schools after redistricting would be required to provide transportation. The grandfathering clause would not apply to younger siblings entering school.

On Thursday, July 14 the Albemarle County School Board received a redistricting proposal from Superintendent Kevin Castner to take effect in 2006. The recommendations are based on the following premises: equitable educational opportunity should be guaranteed at every school; the concept of neighborhood schools should be honored to the greatest degree possible given building capacity considerations; and travel time should be limited to the greatest degree possible given building capacity considerations. While the Redistricting Committee presented a longer-term solution that anticipated growth and minimized redistricting in the near future, the Superintendent’s proposed plan affects fewer students because of the uncertainty of where growth will occur.

The Superintendent’s recommendations are presented in two parts. Part I includes recommendations for boundary changes to be implemented in the fall of 2006 and part II includes recommendations for a change in policy. Details of the plan are located in the Redistricting Recommendation Folder.
