What is the GED? |

'GED' is an acronym used for the General Educational Development Tests , a battery of examinations administered by states and jurisdictions to measure the skills and knowledge similar to a high school course of study. GED graduates earn a GED credential. |

What are the GED Tests? |

The Tests of General Educational Development (GED Tests) are designed to measure the skills and knowledge equivalent to a high school course of study. The five subject area tests which comprise the GED test battery are Mathematics; Language Arts, Reading; Language Arts, Writing (including essay); Science; and Social Studies. |

Who is eligible to take the GED Tests? |

A |
You may take the GED Tests if:
- You are not enrolled in high school, and
- You have not graduated from high school, and
- You are at least age 16, and
- You meet state, provincial, or territorial requirements regarding age, residency, and the length of time since leaving school.
If you are considering leaving high school, we recommend that you first meet with your high school counselor to talk seriously about your decision and the level of academic skill needed to pass the GED Tests. |

What does it mean to 'pass' the GED Tests? |

A |
In order to pass the GED Tests, an examinee must have a combined passing score of 2250; in addition, each individual subject area test score must be 410 or greater. Those passing the GED Tests have demonstrated a level of knowledge equal to or greater than 40% of graduating high school seniors. |

How much time does it take to complete the GED Tests? |

The battery of five GED Tests takes 7 hours and 5 minutes to complete. In Central Virginia, students may either take the entire battery of tests at scheduled testing sites over the course of one or two sittings, or they may take portions of the test one at a time. |

How long will it take for me to earn the GED? |

The amount of time it takes you to earn your GED is based on your educational background and the amount of time you are willing and able to put into preparing for the tests. It may take only a few months of studying or it may take a little longer. Either way, Albemarle Adult Education will work with you for as long as it takes to help you reach your goals. |

Where can I take the GED Tests? |

GED Testing sessions are held throughout Central Virginia year-round. In the Charlottesville area, tests are given monthly over the course of two days during the school year at Charlottesville High School. You must register in advance to take the GED Test. If you are a resident of the City of Charlottesville, call Carol Coffey to register (434.245.2823). If you live in Albemarle or any of the surrounding counties, call Stacey Liljegren to register (434.296.5812). |

How much does the GED Test cost? |

In Virginia, the cost for first-time test takers is $35. After the first test, the cost is $7 per test to retake them. Albemarle County Schools will pay these fees for our students! |

Go to College - by passing the GED, graduates have shown that they have the same level of academic knowledge and skills as traditional high school graduates. 98% of colleges and universities in the United States accept the GED credential.

Where can I find GED Preparation classes? |

Albemarle County Schools Adult Education offers FREE GED Preparation classes to adults in Central Virginia, year-round. These classes offer individualized instruction, counseling and evaluations and students work at thier own pace.
