A Moment to Remember at Yancey Elementary School

Recently, our fifth grade students wrote essays explaining why they believe their educations are so very important. Reading their writings to an audience made up of the student body and teachers, they read with conviction and poise. Moving statements in these student readings included statements about learning to forgive themselves when they make mistakes in the name of being people who take risks, understanding that doing their best now in elementary school is an important first step to getting into college, and earning a great deal of money would allow them to make contributions to charities to help others. The student body listened to these students with admiration. As adults, we listened carefully and were reminded never to take for granted how our daily actions with students impact them. Yancey Elementary School may be a small little school but that assembly proved to us that we are a school community with big achievements, big ideas, and big futures.
