The format for the Naturalization Test for U.S. Citizenship changed in 2008 to emphasize the fundamental concepts of American democracy and the rights and responsibilities of the American citizen.  This change is meant to encourage applicants to learn and identify with the basic values we all share as Americans.

The Naturalization process can be confusing and, at times, intimidating, especially for ESOL students for whom English is not their first language.  Albemarle County Adult Education offers a U.S. Citizenship Test Preparation (Pathway to U.S. Citizenship) class aimed at helping ESOL citizenship applicants understand the new test format and the Naturalization process, and become comfortable with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
