8th Period Release

Juniors may become eligible for "release" from attending 8th Period effective January 20, the end of the semester grading period.  The school designed this period to provide additional time and academic support for students.  During 8th Period, students complete make up work, prepare for SOL and AP tests, and participate in a variety of other school related activities including class meetings, club meetings and pep rallies.  Some activities have mandatory attendance.

Early release is a privilege.  Either the parents or the school may revoke this privilege at any time.  The following are some of the reasons the school may revoke 8th Period release.  The student:

  • Experiences a decline in academic performance,
  • Refuses to attend required senior activities, or
  • Presents a truancy or discipline problem.

Regardless if juniors have an 8th Period release, we strongly urge them to continue using this time for academic assistance.

Release Criteria

A Junior must:

  • Earn a "B" or better for each class during the first semester,
  • Have no more than one discipline referral per nine weeks, and
  • Complete career planning activities as noted by Career Specialist, Ms. J. Garnett.  (11th grade resume draft and 2 colleges listed on Career Cruising website)

If you wish to grant your child the 8th Period release privilege, complete the form below and return this letter at your earliest convenience to Mr. Vrhovac, Office 99-G.  Please include your daytime number so that we may verify your signature should it be necessary.  Once we receive and approve the release, we will give your child an 8th Period release card.  The student will present his or her student ID card and release pass to leave school grounds at the end of 6th period.  Showing the pass replaces the student's formal check out procedure.  Remember, you may withhold the release card from your child at any time.
