New Alert !!

01/15/09

The IT Partnership has received reports from Commonwealth of Virginia Agencies indicating that a phishing campaign designed to steal user names and passwords is underway. The phishing email claims to be from an email system administrator stating that the recipient's mailbox is full. The phishing email requests that the recipient send an email containing the recipient's user-id and password to an address contained in the body of the email so that the email system administrator can increase the size of the recipient's mailbox and restore normal email service. This email should be deleted upon receipt. Users should never disclose authentication information (passwords or pins) to anyone, including support personnel.

To protect your privacy and security, please remember.....

NEVER click on a link to your financial institution from within an email.
These emails are phishing scams designed to look legitimate. DO NOT click on the link in these e-mails and DELETE the emails immediately.
Other recent phishing email subject lines:

  • "Message"
  • "UVA Community Credit Union Security Update (Issue Number #335G59)"
  • "UVA Credit Union Survey"
  • "Notice to Members"
  • "Read Now"
  • "Your profile has been locked"
  • "University of Virginia Credit Union Account Disabled"

Phishing scams are another way that criminals are trying to access consumer's private information. Criminals send an email that looks like an official communication with logos and links to Web sites in the hope that the recipient will respond and provide private information such as account numbers credit card numbers, Social Security numbers or PINs.
