ACPS Wins a Top Prize in VSBA Green Schools Challenge
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA) -- Albemarle County Public Schools division has been selected as a top prize winner for the VSBA Green Schools Challenge: a friendly competition designed to promote implementations of specific environmental policies and practical actions to reduce carbon emissions generated by both the local school division and the broader community.
The awards will be distributed at the Opening General Session of the Virginia School Board Association's Annual Convention at 2:00pm on Wednesday, November 18th, 2009.
The Division won a top prize by adopting energy and environmental policies, conducting a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, performing energy audits, constructing school additions to obtain LEED certification, adopting an anti-idling policy, establishing recycling and environmental clubs in schools, maintaining an environmental management system, implementing integrated pest management and green cleaning, and other environmental initiatives.
Many school-based programs allowed ACPS to obtain this award, such as composting initiatives at Crozet Elementary and Western Albemarle High School, Henley Middle's "Three Green Things" initiative, Greer Elementary School's collaboration with the Local Food Hub, an original recycling poster created by Albemarle High School art students, and the efforts of volunteer Recycling Coordinators at every school.
