Parents as Tutors Workshop
Is your child having trouble understanding math? Just not getting the difference between mitosis and meiosis? Having a hard time getting started on that English essay? You know your child would benefit from tutoring, but that costs money. The answer? Tutor your child yourself! You and your child can enroll in the Parents as Tutors (PAT) workshop at PVCC. Laura Symons, Director of the PVCC Learning Center, and Walt Kehoe, a tutor with 25+ years of experience, will conduct the workshop.
In the first session, you will learn how the brain works in learning, what makes a good parent-tutor, how to motivate your child to learn, and how to tutor your child in a subject you find difficult yourself. In the second session, parents and students will first meet separately to discuss their role in the tutoring process. They will then meet together for tutoring exercises. During the following week, the families will begin tutoring. At the third and final session, the group will discuss how the week's tutoring went, problems and pitfalls, and bright spots and benefits. Laura and Walt will be available in the weeks following the workshop to answer any questions or help address any issues that come up.
The workshop will be held on Thursdays, November 5, 12, and 19 from 6:00pm-8:00pm in Room 850 at PVCC. The cost for all three sessions is only $75 per one parent/child pair. Additional family members are $75 each. For more information or to register, send an email to workforce@pvcc.edu or call 434.961.5354.

SAT & SAT Subject Test - All high school students planning to attend a college or university after graduation are required to take either the American College Test (ACT) or SAT Reasoning Test for admission. SAT II Subject Tests are given on most dates that SAT Reasoning Test is given. Most competitive colleges recommend that students take two SAT Subject Tests to showcase their talents in a particular scholastic area. Subject Tests range from Writing to History, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and many levels of Mathematics. Check with your school's counseling department for locations for each test. Many Albemarle County high schools are used as testing sites, although not every high school is used on each date.
