AHS coming on the field

GO PATRIOTS !

Hello fellow AHS football supporters!
It's hard to believe football season is right around the corner... I think we are in store for a banner year! Our new coaching staff is charged up and ready to embrace our motto "Don't tread on me!" Two-a-days start on August 2nd. All that being said - there are some areas that we can already begin to work on as football boosters. At the top of the page you will find a number of documents that you can use for a variety of reasons which I will explain.

Personal Ad ~ each family can purchase space in our football program for personal messages to their player - words of encouragement, inside family jokes, whatever - you are only limited by your imagination (and G rating of course!)

Business Ad - any business could purchase ad space in our program...all details are listed here. Feel free to print off and sell ads.

Donation Letter 1 - this letter will be sent out to five personal or business connections of each of our players. Players will be asked to bring in those five addresses and the boosters will send the letters with the acknowledgment of the player in the letter. This could be used to seek support from relatives who live far away (like grandma & grandpa!), to favorite restaurants, to local employers, etc.

Donation Letter 2 - there are several local businesses who have already expressed an interest in supporting our team. This letter gives them further incentive to do so. If you know of any business that you think we should send this to - please let me know.
Pre-game Meal Sponsor  (Varsity only)- in past years, every evening before a Varsity Game - a business or group of families has signed up to sponsor the meal for the Varsity team and coaches. Last year it was mostly businesses, but we want to encourage family participation as well. If you know of a business that may want to donate a meal (like Vocelli Pizza,Chick-Fil-A, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Wood Grill Buffet, Chipotle, Jimmy John's, etc) - please feel free to ask them for a particular date and email me the details. I will post a master list to our website so you can see where we are for each meal. Business's "in-kind" food donations can be substituted for ad space in the program based on the value of the meal or meals donated. For example - last year Wood Grill Buffet got advertisement in the front cover - in color - based on their willingness to serve the entire team in their restaurant for free. There will also be opportunities for parents to help serve the meals.  Watch the website for sign-up opportunities.

Lot's to process...so please take your time and let me know what you think. I welcome all suggestions and input. The budget crunch in the schools, coupled with the down tick in the economy - has set us on a mission to be good stewards of our gifts, time and money. All expenditures will be measured against need and will hopefully help lead to a vibrant football year!

Sincerely-
Katy

WELCOME COACH ALLEY

We are extremely proud and excited to announce Mr. Mike Alley as our new Head Varsity Football coach.  Mike is a 1984 graduate of Albemarle High School and a 1998 graduate of Randolph Macon.  He is married to Christine, his lovely wife of 18 years.  They have a 14 year old son, Peydon.  Coach Alley brings to the Patriot program 14 years of experience in coaching high school football.  He has been an assistant coach at Albemarle, Western Albemarle and William Monroe with 6 years at Blue Ridge School, 3 of those years serving as their Head Varsity Football Coach.  He also served as the Charlottesville/UVA FCA coordinator during which time he directed FCA Football team camps,  7 on 7 camps and served as chaplain of the UVA Football team.

Coach Alley will be at Albemarle High School on Thursday, 5/6 to meet our football players at 3:10 in the Big Gym followed by a 4:00 meeting with the 2009-10 Football coaching staff.  Prior to meeting the players, we have invited the local media to meet him at 2:30 in the gym lobby for a brief press conference.

Obviously, Coach Alley has a lot on his plate with an immediate priority to meet and get to know our wonderful young men and to select his coaching staff.  Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be hosting a "meet and greet" so you as our Patriot parents can meet and officially welcome Coach Alley into our program.  We'll keep you updated on the date, site and time once it's confirmed.

In the mean time, please join me in welcoming Coach Alley on board as our Head Coach.  I am excited to see him lead and develop our program, our team, our staff and most importantly, our boys!

GO PATRIOTS!

    IT'S HOT - HYDRATE!

American College of Sports Medicine Renews Caution for Preseason Training in the Heat:

    Excerpts:
Severe incidents from heat-related complications are notoriously problematic for young football players, particularly during preseason practices. The overwhelming majority of serious heat illnesses occur in the first four days of preseason football practice (especially on the first and second days), when players are not acclimatized to the heat, the intensity/duration of practice, or the uniform.

Parents, players, and coaches should all be aware of the warning signs and symptoms of dehydration and heat illness:

Believe it or not, the body needs up to 14 days of progressive activity in the heat to undergo the physiological changes that allow for safe and sufficient acclimatization (the first three to five days are the most critical).

The best way to stay well hydrated? The old adage of drinking six to eight glasses of water a day still holds true for most individuals. Athletes should drink 16 oz of water or sports drink 1-2 hours before exercise. This should be repeated 15 minutes before exercise. Athletes should use the summer to get used to this level of fluid; at the beginning of football practice, the athlete may become nauseous or vomit if his body is not accustomed to drinking this much. If the athlete is adequately hydrated before exercise, the urine will be clear. Players should avoid sodas, energy drinks and other caffeinated beverages.

Players should practice in light-colored clothing and helmets should be removed whenever possible (during instruction).

Trainers will be on duty during practice - if your player feels ill, encourage them to seek them out for help.
