IT'S HOT - HYDRATE!
American College of Sports Medicine Renews Caution for Preseason Training in the Heat: Parents, players, and coaches should all be aware of the warning signs and symptoms of dehydration and heat illness:
Believe it or not, the body needs up to 14 days of progressive activity in the heat to undergo the physiological changes that allow for safe and sufficient acclimatization (the first three to five days are the most critical). The best way to stay well hydrated? The old adage of drinking six to eight glasses of water a day still holds true for most individuals. Athletes should drink 16 oz of water or sports drink 1-2 hours before exercise. This should be repeated 15 minutes before exercise. Athletes should use the summer to get used to this level of fluid; at the beginning of football practice, the athlete may become nauseous or vomit if his body is not accustomed to drinking this much. If the athlete is adequately hydrated before exercise, the urine will be clear. Players should avoid sodas, energy drinks and other caffeinated beverages. Players should practice in light-colored clothing and helmets should be removed whenever possible (during instruction). Trainers will be on duty during practice - if your player feels ill, encourage them to seek them out for help.
