The mission of the Novice Teacher Network is to positively impact student learning and achievement by advancing the efficacy of novice teachers and by guiding their transition to exemplary career professionals.

The Novice Teacher Network supports beginning teachers through a well-designed mentoring program. Experience proves that mentoring programs are crucial for the induction of new teachers into the profession and to help guarantee their retention beyond their first few years. Mentors guide novice teachers as they blend the lessons learned in their credentialing program and their own educational beliefs with the realities and expectations of the profession. Novice teachers develop the mindset that lifelong learning and professional development are the keys to a satisfying career.

The Novice Teacher Network...

  • provides professional development designed specifically to meet the unique needs of novice teachers.
  • provides novices with structured, consistent support from a mentor for the first two years of teaching.
  • offers differentiated support in developing pedagogy along a continuum as novices progress from year one to year two of teaching.
  • supports standards-based goal setting and reflection.
  • leads to increased teacher confidence and effectiveness through non-evaluative, formative assessment of practice and student learning.
  • enables membership in a supportive learning community of other novices and school division staff.
  • is adapted from the nationally-recognized induction model developed by the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
  • evolved from a partnership with the University of Virginia and Charlottesville City Public Schools.
