All schools will open two hours late today, Friday 1/22/10. Buses will run two hours later than usual. We will continue to monitor the weather throughout the morning, and will update this site if the schedule changes. Este es un mensaje importante de las escuelas públicas del condado de Albemarle. After-School & Evening Activities Canceled

All After-School Activities for 1/21/10 are Cancelled;School Board Work Session for 1/21 also Cancelled Due to inclement weather, all after-school and evening events in Albemarle County Public Schools for Thursday, 1/21 have been cancelled. This includes all athletic events and practices. Evening High School and Adult and Community Education classes are cancelled. The Extended-Day Enrichment Program at elementary schools will operate until 6 p.m. The School Board budget work session for this evening has been cancelled. The Board will hold a budget work session on Tuesday, 1/26 at 6:30 p.m. Any activities scheduled in Albemarle County school buildings are also cancelled. School facilities will be unavailable for building rental use. The School Schedule Hotline, (434) 296-5886, will be updated by 6 a.m. on Friday morning regarding the status of school operations for Friday, 1/22.

Winter Weather Procedures

During the fall/winter, parents will receive information outlining the winter weather procedures for re-opening school following a major winter storm. The School Division's hotline, which can be accessed 24-hours a day by calling (434) 296-5886, contains the latest word on the status of all Albemarle County Schools.

Once it is determined that the majority of the roads are safe for school bus travel after a shutdown due to winter weather, the public will be alerted through the media, beginning at noon on the day before school is to re-open. Parents who believe their particular road still presents an unacceptable safety hazard are encouraged to contact the Transportation Department at (434) 973-5716. Calls will be taken until 9:00 p.m. on the evening before school is to reopen and again starting at 6:00 a.m. the next day. School bus drivers will contact parents of students residing on any road still identified by the department as unsafe in an attempt to work out alternative arrangements.

By working together and using the procedures outlined above, schools can be re-opened sooner than in past years. It is important to understand that student safety is the single most important criteria used to make a decision about opening school.

The Superintendent will be responsible for determining if school will not be in session or if a delayed opening or an early closing of school buildings is necessary due to inclement weather. The Deputy County Executive will make the same decision for the County Office Building
All Building Services employees, and custodians not assigned to Building Services, are emergency-personnel and are expected to report to work, regardless of weather.
All professional development classes are automatically cancelled if school is not in session due to inclement weather. Should school dismiss early due to inclement weather, professional development classes are also cancelled. The instructor is then responsible for working with participants to make up the instructional time at a later date.
