Burley High Varsity Club Recovers Athletic
Program Legacy
Members of the Jackson P. Burley High School Varsity Club and Superintendent Pam Moran stand in front of the new trophy case purchased to house mementos of Burley High's extensive athletic accomplishments. The case was dedicated last month, and is part of the Burley Wall of Fame, showcasing the school's rich community history.
Jackson P. Burley High School opened in September 1951 as a consolidated school for all black students who previously attended Jefferson High School in the City and Esmont High School and Albemarle Training School in Albemarle County.
In June 1967, Burley High School closed to honor federal and state legislation requiring integration of schools. During its sixteen-year history, the school left an unmatched winning athletic program legacy that was the pride of the community. The school is now a middle school, housing students in grades 6-8, as well as the county's Community Public Charter School, an arts-infused alternative middle school.
