Junior and Senior Internship

Each year area businesses and Monticello High School juniors and seniors enjoy a win-win relationship. Monticello 's work-based internship program not only reinforces the connection between school preparation and work-place needs, but it also provides local employers with the satisfaction of assisting our students with career-preparation and evaluation. The internship program is a wonderful 'hands-on' experience that helps students evaluate a career field and forms realistic work place expectations.

Interns, report to a job site for an average of four hours per week where they work closely with a mentor for a semester or year long experience. Interns typically rotate through various aspects of the business or organization's operation. These training programs are tailored for each student and site. As a result, most students leave their internship feeling empowered to make wise choices in career planning and college selection. Some interns have even discovered that their first career choice was not "right" for them. This realization is a valuable learning experience.

Juniors as well as seniors will be able to gain work experiences in such fields as medicine, education, law, engineering, computers, broadcast journalism, print journalism, graphic communications, real estate, retailing, youth ministry, finance, human relations and more. Interns are supervised at work and at school by the internship coordinator. Each week, students submit a journal of their internship experiences for the prior week. Interns also develop a portfolio of their duties and experiences. Students are assessed by both the job-site sponsor and the program coordinator. Sponsors evaluate the intern's attendance, communication skills, quality of task performance, and interpersonal relationships at the work place. Students' class assignments, portfolios, and exit interviews are reviewed by the internship coordinator.

A large and diverse network of businesses provides a great variety of work-based learning opportunities for MHS students.  As an important side benefit, students learn the value of developing relationships with local business people. By opening their doors to MHS upperclassmen, dozens of local businesses have aided our students in becoming better prepared to enter college and provide a more realistic idea of what they want for their future.

Prospective Interns complete the online application packet in full. The application packet consist of an online application, a Student Performance Contract and three teacher recommendations. The Student Performance Contract and Teacher Recommendation forms can be downloaded from this site.
